Challenged by Mara, and from his seat of meditation under the Bodhi tree, the Buddha is said to have reached down to touch the earth just before the moment of his enlightenment. The image of the hands of the Buddha in bhumisparsha, or the gesture (mudra) of touching the earth, therefore represents steadfastness. Touching earth signifies that the experience of enlightenment is not fantasy but an embodied, grounded, and sharable experience.
